A number of our local branches are hosting talks before the start of their autumn course programmes.
Everyone is welcome to attend any of these talks and we look forward to meeting you – especially if the WEA is new to you and you’d like more information about the organisation and our courses.

Newark’s exotic Coffee Palace
Popular local author Trevor Fracknall relates some of the history of this iconic building in Newark and its creator, the wilful daughter of the Duke of Portland who built extravagant coffee palaces in memory of her husband.

Popular author and local historian Michael Payne will be talking about the fascinating history of Picture Houses in Nottingham and surrounding areas.

‘Bonnie Prince Charlie and the ‘45’
A talk and DVD by historian and WEA tutor Brian Stone
On the 4th December 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobite Army arrived in Derby. Within two days he’d made the fateful decision to retreat to Scotland and his attempt to overthrow the Hanoverian monarchy was doomed.
This talk will examine the course of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745, its causes, results and the factors that determined that fateful decision in Derby.
