Life in the Workhouse
A joint visit to Southwell Workhouse on Monday 15th June by students from Kevin Brown’s WEA Family History courses in Barnsley and Leicester was a great success.
A behind the scenes tour by wonderfully knowledgeable workhouse volunteer guides gave us all an insight into what life was like inside a union workhouse and enabled us to empathise with ancestors who’d found themselves in need of the workhouse at some point in their lives.
We learnt that pauperism – without the means of subsistence – and not poverty was the driver for seeking help from the workhouse authorities and also that by the 1980s the Southwell Workhouse building was being used to train police dogs! the things you learn on a WEA trip.
Our tutor Gill Groom will be offering a new Family History course (beginners) for WEA Beeston branch in autumn 2015. This will be held on Thursday mornings 10.30am-12.30pm at Beeston Library, Foster Ave. NG9 1AE.
