WEA Mansfield & Bassetlaw Community Programme
We first started working within the Mansfield community in 1999 with grant funding from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, to enable those affected by the closures of local industries, such as mining and hosiery manufacture, to learn new skills including using computers. Since then, we have run an extensive range of computer courses in local community venues providing opportunities for local residents to access learning in convenient locations.
Once the Trust funding concluded, our provision became funded through the WEA’s national contract with the Skills Funding Agency. We also receive funding from Nottinghamshire County Council Community Learning and Skills Service (CLaSS) to provide courses for those wanting to return to learning.
Along the way the Mansfield programme was combined with that of the WEA in the Bassetlaw area, and now we offer a range of courses that include crafts, English and maths as well as the long established Community ICT programme in both the Bassetlaw and Mansfield areas.
We provide computer facilities (laptops) in venues where there are none, and in most cases this includes internet access if possible (dependent on venue location). We offer courses leading to recognised IT qualifications, courses to learn ICT skills such as digital imaging or courses using ICT as a tool, e.g. researching family history.
Courses in most cases have a maximum of 12. This gives everyone the opportunity to get to know their fellow learners and ensures the tutor has the time to provide as much support as needed. Classes are relaxed and informal, our tutors are very experienced and patient and in most cases people can join at any time, with no previous experience required.
Our office is located within CVS Mansfield’s premises, Community House, 36 Wood Street, Mansfield. Contact us on 01623 427352 if you would like to find out more.
