For 400 years Nottinghamshire people have been involved in the hosiery trade, you’ll find them listed variously in parish and census records as Framework knitters, FWK or stockingers.

Locally we still have architectural evidence of where they lived and worked; in Stapleford and  at Broomhill Terrace along the A52 by the Sherwin Island.

Maybe your ancestors were ‘in the trade’ … you can find out more about their lives and work at the Nottingham Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington . Their new exhibition LUDDITES provides a fascinating insight into this group and the troubled times in Nottinghamshire as the introduction machine-made socks and stockings and changes in fashion began to affect the livelihoods of Framework knitters.
